International Volunteers seek American Partners in August

On weekdays from August 6th to the 17th, and on Friday the 24th and 31st of August, Pacific International Academy (an ESL program on Marylhurst campus) will be hosting college students from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan to volunteer in the Portland area. We will be at a different site each day, from the Pickathon Festival clean up crew to Habitat for Humanity to Project Grow to Homeless soup kitchens and outdoor activities.

We need conversation partners to do volunteer service alongside them. They are mostly intermediate speakers and are enthusiastic for a cultural exchange.

We are building the schedule now, and you can join for either a day or the full two weeks. If you email me, I will send you the schedule and you can let me know what dates and places work best for you.

 DESCRIPTIONS                

Course description:        Students will work directly with community organizations to analyze problems, design responses and implement solutions. Course may be repeated for credit. Open to non-majors

 Extended description:     This project continues work with CristieCare of Oregon and YouthVillages, which began in Interior Design Studios 7 and 8.  Students will design and create a surface treatment to improve the quality of life for residents.  ChristieCare will install the work.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Program Outcomes:       Through making, students will understand the impact of interior design in transforming an environment, and improving the quality of life for occupants.

On Saturday April 14^th , Marylhurst volunteers particiapated in the clean up and made a big difference!

The National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) is opening a new community clinic and needed help converting an old day care into a usable medical office.    Marylhurst volunteers spent hours cleaning and organizing inside the building.  Volunteers also spent time outside weeding, picking up trash, removing graffiti and mowing the lawn.    It was a great day of service!

Health Interactive Panel: Access, Advocacy, Action    
Moderated by Emily Harris, a former NPR correspondent and OPB host
Explore the challenges people face in obtaining health care and learn what you might do to help. This is a “Fred Friendly” type interactive discussion offering a chance to think and learn together. Moderator Emily Harris leads us through a real-life experience, seeking responses from a panel of experts and audience members.
In the fall of 2010, Emily facilitated a memorable and challenging interactive discussion at Marylhurst regarding our food supply system, (exploring the issues of cost, hunger, waste, and nutrition through the web of relationships among farmers, migrant workers, truckers, food service businesses, restaurants, importers and consumers.) This time, the discussion focuses on health care, including financial and physical issues, coming changes, and the gaps left despite the interdependence of multiple sectors. The evening includes exploration of how individuals can affect change in this complex system.

SERVICE LEARNING SEMINAR C 

LAC 459 &INT559: 3 CREDITS

SPRING TERM 2012

 (Open to all Marylhurst Undergraduate and Graduate Students)

This 3 credit course offers students the opportunity and challenge to take their education and life skills into the larger community, transforming both in the process. 

• Meets LAC Outcome: HCB6. 
• Meets Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS) Outcomes:

           Provide an interdisciplinary perspective to issues and social problems

           Recognize and articulate complex or interrelated ideas and theories;

           Increase skills in analysis, synthesis, and problem solving.

Flexible:

• Offered online with online discussion and support throughout the term; three optional face-to-face meetings (April 5, May 3 & June 7, 3:15-5:30 p.m.)
• Determine your own schedule and complete the required 30 hours of community service at your own pace in your own communities.
• Work within an existing organization or agency (with several choices to choose from in organizations with which Marylhurst has a working relationship), or design your own project (with instructor approval).

Meaningful:

• Put your values and beliefs into practice.
• Deepen your understanding and capacity for compassion.
• Share in community service with others.
• Explore your visions for possible lifework.

Expansive:

• Gain experience in a new field.

Instructor:  Susan G. Carter, Ph.D., received her Ph.D. in Humanities (Philosophy and Religion) from The California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS)San Francisco,CA.
